Accessing External Data in SharePoint 2013 and SharePoint Online
Brett Lonsdale
Session Abstract

SharePoint is a very powerful tool for content collaboration as well as having many other capabilities. One of those capabilities is to provide users with a central location for all data related to the business whether it is stored within SharePoint or external to SharePoint. Organizations have external data stored in Microsoft SQL, Oracle, SAP and many other external systems. You may be in the position whereby your external data is hosted on an on-premises server but you use SharePoint within the cloud. This session is designed to help you understand the capabilities of accessing external data within SharePoint and how to build the best solution. We'll look at using Power BI in Office 365 to report on external data, and also Business Connectivity Services to build solutions allowing for data to be displayed, searched and manipulated. Brett Lonsdale has specialised in Business Connectivity Services or accessing External Data in general since SharePoint 2003. Brett is the author of 'Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Business Connectivity Services' and 'SharePoint 2007 Developers Guide to Business Data Catalog'. More recently Brett has authored the Business Connectivity Services chapter for the 'Microsoft SharePoint Online for Office 365 Administering and Configuring for the Cloud'. The intention of this session is to demystify the numerous options when accessing external data.
